Fouth, revised and updated edition (November 2019)
Hongi Hika (1772 - 1828) and Hone Heke (1807 - 1849) were two fascinating Maori warriors. Hongi was instrumental in convincing Samuel Marsden to establish the first mission station at Hohi - Oihi Bay and the second mission station at Kerikeri. Hone Heke married Hongi's daughter and was one of the first Maori chiefs to sign the controversial Waitangi Treaty.
Both traveled to England, bought weapons and fought wars. Hongi died from wounds received in battle and Hone died from tuberculosis.
Family and friends live in Kerikeri, Bay of Islands, and introduced us to this historically rich and fascinating area, prompting the production of the Cook and Marsden, and Hongi Hika and Hone Heki accounts.
This is a pictorial presentation to complete a simple puzzle which is more complex that what my writings suggest.
