The aim of this text on soil mechanics is to present the fundamental principles of soil mechanics with clear and careful explanations. The book assembles all the essential elements of an undergraduate course, leading from introductory empirical and theoretical explanations of the nature of soils through to practical applications such as earth-retaining structures, ground improvement techniques and ground anchors. Semi-empirical design procedures and geotechnical processes are covered. For the new edition, extra material has been added on soil compaction relating to the latest specification for highway works, and the section on lateral earth pressure has been updated to comply with the new Code of Practice for Earth Retaining Structures. The section on shear strength has been revised and expanded and new examples and problems have been added. Worked examples are included throughout the book to consolidate understanding of the fundamental principles and to illustrate their application in practice. In addition, a range of problems is set for solution by the reader.
