The introduction of standards for the skidding resistance of UK trunk roads has increased interest in alternative techniques for restoring road texture. This report covers the first part of a study undertaken to determine the effectiveness of mechanical retexturing of road surfaces. It reviews the systems available and makes an initial assessment of each method in terms of any improvements in skidding resistance or texture achieved in the early life of the treatments, together with any strengths or weaknesses for particular applications.
