Aramis Carlyle has just begun his second tour of duty on the Gopher Hole, a space station that is humanity's departure point to the stars. A Navy exploration vessel, the SDS Starchaser, returns to the Gopher Hole with just two survivors of a 12-person crew. One survivor is catatonic, while the other is incoherent and has to be kept sedated. The catatonic patient recovers and tells a story about encountering a monster on an alien planet. The monster got aboard the Starchaser and killed the crew. This fantastic story is discounted as mad ravings until murders begin on the Gopher Hole. As security forces scour the halls, Aramis hunts for the answers in the mind of his patient. Eventually, he learns that a flaw in the new star drive can unleash a monster in us all. Meanwhile, powerful forces conspire to hide their failure, even as the killer selects his next victim.
