"Christabel" is a screenplay based on the true story of a young Englishwoman who lived through the whole of World War II as a German citizen. Christabel Burton married Peter Bielenberg, a German Lawyer in 1934, and moved to Berlin. With the rise of Fascism in Germany, her husband became caught in a conflict of loyalties. Drawn in by his friend, Adam von Trott, he became part of a group determined to challenge Hitler's rise to power. When war was declared Christabel decided to remain in Germany although she moved to a safe village in the Black Forest. In the autumn of 1943, a small group led by Adam mounted an assassination attempt on Hitler. The plan failed, von Trott was hanged and her husband Peter was sent to Ravensbruck. Christabel presented herself for interrogation at Ravensbruck and persuaded the Gestapo that Peter was innocent. After a long separation he managed to reach the Black Forest and the family was reunited. Dennis Potter is the author of "The Singing Detective".
