This is the story of a single mother who is attempting to rebuild her life after the break up of her marriage. She gingerly starts to look for a social life for herself, starting with the 'Lonely Hearts' column in the local paper.
Through this column she meets Pete, after first trawling through a few Unsuitables! All seems to go well until the demons from the past creep up on her and she begins what seems at first a fairly harmless obsession with Pete's first love, Ellie. Her own insecurities mean that she cannot rest until she has met Ellie face to face and seen that she is no threat to her relationship with Pete.
However, just laying eyes on Ellie is not enough. She befriends her and even starts to build up a file of all the information she can glean about Ellie and her past with Pete. Her mental health starts to suffer, her relationship crumbles when Pete finds out what has been happening and the end of the novel sees a tragic twist to the whole affair.
