With this collection of essays and studies, Otto Zwierlein presents the sum of four decades of research in classical literature and philology. Fundamental articles and reviews on Seneca tragicus form the main focus of the first volume, devoted to Seneca; they are complemented by three papers on the Apocolocyntosis, on De clementia and the Consolatio ad Marciam.

The second volume (on classical antiquity and the middle ages) throws a thematic bridge from the drama and rhetoric of the Greeks, via various areas of Latin literature (above all Ennius, Accius, Catullus, Cicero, Pliny, Statius, Tacitus, Isidor) right across to Late Latin Christian literature and Medieval Latin language and literature.

For this collection, all the papers have been thoroughly revised, and some of them expanded. Recent research has been considered throughout. The collection is completed with several indices, a bibliography from 1965 - 2004 and a list of the theses supervised by Otto Zwierlein.
