This book covers the last five years of Shin Egashira's mechanical works and drawings. Projects such as the Fish and Cat machines, the Shoe Box and the English House are machines that comment with humour on a personal vision of the Western world. The arrangement of these gadgets is very exact. These objects move with a deliberate rough elegance, emanating sounds, sending out pictures and grabbing attention. Each object has a series of detailed drawings which explains the mechanisms and their final form. Shin Egashira graduated from the Architectural Association in 1990 and is presently a Unit Master in the Intermediate School. He had exhibited widely in both Britain and Japan and was Artist-in-Residence at the Camden Arts Centre in 1991. His work has most recently appeared at the Venice Biennale and this exhibition will tour to the Mars Gallery, Tokyo.
