Scottish borders, Gaira of Clan Colquhoun comes upon the village she was fleeing to to find it in ruins and only a few damaged children remaining, when Robert of Dent also comes upon the village, while he investigates what soldiers under his command have done, he offers to help her get to safety. Romance ensues.

Not a bad read.
