Despite the affluence enjoyed by many, for reasons of class, age, gender, ethnicity and disability, a significant number of people in our society are experiencing "poor work". It might be temporary, part-time, poorly-paid, homeworking or a combination of these. This book traces the role of and changes in the labour market in creating a divided working class, with an increasingly marginalized "substratum" of, for instance, unskilled, low-paid, black, female and disabled workers. It reviews the current literature, synthesizes the relevant data and engages with contemporary debates.
