The ancient kingdom of Dumnonia, England's South-West peninsula, contains remnants of some of the oldest landscapes in the country. In this pioneering work, Della Hooke uses the ancient charter-bounds to explore and explain the history of settlement and land use in the region. Her careful study also illuminates the relationship between the British territorial institutions of Cornwall - where the Cornish language is used in many of the charters - and those of Anglo-Saxon Devon.
The book presents all the topographical detail in the charters, together with all the estate boundaries. Each charter is individually mapped and the its landmarks are located as closely as possible. The result is a study which provides valuable and readily available data for historians and students of land use.
Dr DELLA HOOKElectures in geography at Cheltenham and Gloucester College of Higher Education (Gloucestershire) and is an Honorary Research Fellow in the School of Geography, the University of Birmingham. Worcestershire Anglo-Saxon Charter-Bounds is by the same author.
