This is an English as a foreign language textbook for Japanese high school or university students. "Reaching for Basic Comprehension" involves students in a series of intercultural situations that they might find themselves in either in Japan or abroad. By having students practice a variety real life scenarios (gambits) with different classmates, they can begin to develop the real-life interactive communicative skills. Teachers can then address issues concerning students' performance, fluency, and accuracy. Thus, many of the pitfalls of typical EFL conversation texbooks are avoided. Students no longer have to memorize or practice sterile conversations that have no relevance to Japanese culture, values, or the students' own views. The textbook also allows teachers to have a written record of what students would have said in a particular situation.
