The Art of Growing Up is about fifteen year old Nick and his best friend Ollie. For Nick, being fifteen feels like the most difficult thing in the world. He's watching Ollie struggling through the after effects of sexual abuse, he's beginning to question his sexuality and to think he might like other guys, and that his best friend might be one of them. His life is an emotional rollercoaster, and it isn't getting any easier. Nick and Ollie have been best friends since they were five, but after Ollie is sexually abused by his dad, their relationship begins to change into something more as they realise they're in love. The timing couldn't be worse. Ollie is an emotional wreck and Nick isn't sure he can hold him together without their friendship falling apart. Being young and in love should be easy, but it's far from it. Nick can't help asking himself the same question over and over again; can it really be worth it?
