Perl was originally created as a programming tool for Unix, but the emergence of the Web has thrust Perl into the mainstream. Perl is the language of choice for creating CGI scripts to add interactivity to Web sites. JavaScript is Netscape's popular scripting language for building interactive Web applications and is often used in combination with Perl.
