The launch of CNN's international news Outlet CNNI in 1985 brought about new forms of global political communication, which have reshaped international political communication. CNNI's effect on globalizing 'news' is often associated with McLuhan's metaphor of the 'Global Village.' However, with the 'Global News Machine', CNN has constituted a new global public sphere, a new idea of 'globalization,' which differentiates McLuhan's vision. The author argues that the new global public sphere can be regarded as a trans-societal sphere of mediation, which involves a global exchange of universal but also - increasingly - particular news and political information issues. This new diverse global information flow provides the communication platform, on which a global civil society emerges. "News in the Global Sphere" discusses the history of international communication and develops a theoretical framework for the analysis of current global media developments on the basis of an empirical analysis of CNN's "World Report" programme.
