Shrewsbury has long been a railway town of great interest, the Tudor-esque station in a spectacular setting literally above the Severn and up against the Norman castle. The author has travelled all or part of the route between London and Shrewsbury every year since his birth in 1937. This book not only illustrates those journeys, but those on the many other lines connecting Shrewsbury with South, Mid- and North Wales, Chester, Merseyside, Manchester and beyond, Worcester and industrial West Midlands. Before 1923, Shrewsbury was where two great companies met: the LNWR, which called itself the Premier Line, and the GWR which knew it was the best. Their influence lasted right through the steam era into the 1960s and can still be found in buildings and some spectacular civil engineering works on lines leading to the county town. Great engines such as the Stanier Pacifics and Western Kings were succeeded by the first generation of mainline diesels, 40s, Warships and Westerns, but preserved steam is still a feature. Shrewsbury Bound: Journeys to the Shropshire County Town relives the romanticised era of steam.
Gloriously illustrated in stunning mono and colour, it brings back to life the glory days of yesteryear where coal-burning steam locos remained king.
