An autobiographical accounts of three successive generations of young men coming of age. They were men of their times, but the times varied enormously. John Row grew up in a western Canada still in the throes of settlement. He served in World War I and left a vivid account of his involvement in that struggle. John Row's son-in-law, Russ Stewart, was born at the beginning of the great depression. His accounts largely relate to his struggle to escape from that economic quagmire. Russ's son, Tom Stewart, was born into the cold war era of the 1960s. He describes how his generation coped with the threat of nuclear war and how he remained true to himself and found his way in a rapidly changing world.
