The narrator, Duncan 'Slick' Salivo, is a professional bowler who wants two things from life: the Tournament of Champions trophy and a wife. He launches his 1986/87 campaign unaware that CBS plans to end its contract with the PBA tour, but he soon finds himself at the center of a vicious struggle between the television networks who want to bring the PBA to its knees, and the PBA's leadership who want a more lucrative contract and better demographics at any cost. Not only that, but on the rollercoaster ride to success he encounters corporate greed, the duplicity of the media, the fickleness of the fans, and the frailty of the women in his life. In spite of these obstacles he takes four titles including the U.S. Ladies Open; and finally, by risking his life and his image, he wins the Tournament of Champions.
