Colonial heiress Miss Dorothea Spragg is regarded throughout England as a second Eve, all because of an unfortunate indiscretion which she committed in spite of her better nature. When it becomes known that she is traveling toward prosperous, peaceful Puddingdale the town prepares itself for the worst; yet the worst still happens. Puddingdale, as investigating journalist Mr. Lowell A. Beasley later discovers, was ripe for a fall even before Miss Spragg arrived. Although it seemed a paradise on earth, below the surface it was a cesspool of depravity. The town, he finds, had its share of illicit affairs, naughty tableaux vivants, voyeurism, moonlight swims, and other risque goings-on, all of which added to the viscous, noxious mixture that finally spilled over on the night of the widely disliked Squire Pudding's wake.
