Her use of language is simple and straight forward, but so heartfelt; revealing the longings and fears and unrest and corruption and faith of each of the characters beautifully. It's hard to analyze any writing when you're so immersed in these people's lives.

Her ancient world (ranging from Jerusalem to Rome to Ephesus) is as complete as her characters. There is nothing jarring, nothing out of place even though the culture is vastly different than ours and often cheesy in most narratives.

This is an amazingly balanced book; romantic without being trashy, full of faith and integrity without being preachy, allowing some characters to be corrupted without bringing our hearts into the darkness as well, and helping others find their way to freedom.
