This new reference is a collection of words that are associated in different ways with South Australia--those in the book's title represent both the oldest and the newest cultures in the state.

While the majority of words used by South Australians are, of course, just the same as those of their fellow Australians, it is the different words that reflect, to some degree, the history of a society. The 500 regional words given here are based on dated sources from books, newspapers and magazines. The quotations span written records from 1835 to 2003, and the order of the chapters follows a rough chronological spread from the first inhabitants of what became 'South Australia', through the settlement of British and other cultures in the colony, agricultural and industrial development through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, to the lifestyle of the present day.
