Poems and More Poems by Ren is a collection of poetry inspired by events and individual experiences from the poet’s life and career. Orphaned early, Ren was exposed to the harsh realities of life as a teenager in care. From these beginnings and throughout her career, first as a nurse and eventually as a comprehensively trained counsellor and EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) practitioner, Ren has written poetry that is both deeply personal and yet widely accessible. In Poems and More Poems by Ren, themes of loss and mortality are seasoned with hope and joy and Ren’s numerous stays in hospital, before and after a renal transplant that gave her life back to her, are written about with honesty and humour. Ren’s collections of poetry also reflects the poet’s spiritual journey. A Christian, who has not always found her relationship with God to be straightforward, she poses many questions through her poetry, inviting the reader to join her as she travels from doubt to affirmation. It is her personal experience of being a patient and her work with traumatised clients that has inspired and informed much of the beautifully written poetry in Poems and More Poems by Ren. However, its appeal lies in the recognition that these difficult and painful feelings are frequently to be found in any life, and therefore the poetry is accessible to many readers.
