Zimmermann's works occupy a central place in the international studio glass movement. A true virtuoso with glass, Zimmermann developed the "mesh" or "honeycomb" vase, a process in which a hot fluid mass is blown through a metal mesh and is thus given a complex inner life. The discovery of his new process allowed him a freedom he was to embrace for his entire artistic career. As he himself said - "The perfection of a machine forces every product into a stencil and removes all sense of an individual life. It became clear to me that glass has to be worked as it flows - the flux must not be violated".
