This is an illustrated introduction to what life must have been like for Australia's first settlers from 1787-1840. These early settlers were convicts and migrants, and the author describes their long and hazardous journey to an unknown land and the years of hardship and struggle that the early pioneers faced. General background information on the period is provided and the topics discussed include how the migrants and convicts lived and worked together, what they ate and wore and how they coped with drought and floods, plus a look at religion, education and recreation for the settlers. The book also examines the differences between the wealthy settlers, mainly officers of the New South Wales Corps, and the poor farmers; and briefly considers the problems and prejudices that grew between the settlers and Australia's native people, the Aborigines. The text is accompanied by a glossary, a further reading list and an index. Nigel Hunter is author of several other books for Wayland including "Helen Keller", "Gandhi", "Martin Luther King" and "A Medieval Monk" in the "How They Lived" series.
