The future shape of the EC is currently the subject of intensive debate. The purpose of this book is to examine the Community's Mediterranean fringe which has been largely neglected as attention has focused on the countries in EFTA and to the East. Whilst Turkey, Cyprus and Malta may appear to be peripheral, they have all formally lodged applications to join the EC which will have to be considered. Indeed, this essential if a comprehensive picture of the wider Europe is to emerge. This book examines the prospect of their accession to the EC, concluding that it is unlikely any of them (and especially Turkey) will be at the front of the Queue. Consequently, it goes on to set their applications in a broader context and considers what, realistically, these countries can expect to be offered and what their role might be in the new emerging European Community.
