On starting Self-Redemption, the author was inspired to write about the 'hidden self', or the unconscious mind, but, on journeying into it, he discovered that he was more concerned with the transference between the conscious and unconscious minds, and, even more, with the transformation of evil into good; hence the title, Self-Redemption. Following the author's instructions, man can, by his own efforts, attain the freedom from human weakness and mortal limitations that is the unacknowledged goal of true religious experience. Erotic Excerpts is dedicated to two prostitutes - each a 'tart with a heart' - who unknowingly, and independently, gave birth to the Son of God, his brief association with each of these women being greatly advantageous to his course of Enlightenment; their warmth, and nobility of spirit, indirectly enabled him to finally acknowledge his own identity in the re-incarnation of Christ.
