Van Meteren's Virginia was first published in 1961. Minnesota Archive Editions uses digital technology to make long-unavailable books once again accessible, and are published unaltered from the original University of Minnesota Press editions. An important source of information for Europeans about the Virginia colony in America during its earliest years was the History of the Netherlands by the great Dutch historian Emanuel Van Meteren. Van Meteren, who write this account in England, related his observations and opinions of the Virginia enterprise from its beginnings to his death in 1612. Professor Parker excerpts and translates portions of this work and places it in historical perspective, discussing the background of Anglo-Dutch relations. The present book is based primarily on the 1609 and 1614 Dutch editions and the 1612 German edition of Van Meteren's History, copies of which are in the James Ford Bell Collection of the University of Minnesota Library.
