Research has confirmed what practice has long shown, that effective early intervention makes improvement in child behaviour more likely. A wide range of professionals, such as health visitors, school nurses and social workers, may need to work with parents of children who have behavioural difficulties or are at risk of developing them. Interest has risen recently in the use of behavioural management principles and evidence-based practice, for which the knowledge and skills to implement these strategies with families is required. Most health visitors report that dealing with child behaviour problems constitutes a major part of their workload but many do not feel equipped to engage parents in systematic treatment programmes. This text provides practical guidance and supports education and training for this work.
