A guide to the central role of the secondary-school tutor, designed for the experienced teacher wishing to reconsider and strengthen his or her approach to tutoring as well as for the first time tutor. The author concentrates on how to make whole-group tutoring the core of the work. The content and approach of a Tutorial Programme is explored in depth. Special reference is made to the LTR, but the book also stands independently of it. The core of the analysis is the pastoral responsibility for "personal development" and how the tutor can work towards this. Other topics include: getting to know your tutees, home/school liaison, the beginnings of vocational guidance, information-handling skills and the tutor group, individual counselling, relationship with colleagues, the arts and tutoring, managing the tutor group and developing decision-making strengths. Practical examples are drawn from the author's experience with in-service work in mjany parts of the country, and the book is written in the light of recent developments in pastoral care, including the new requiremenst of the Teachers' Pay and Conditions Document, 1987 and the Education Reform Act.
