Given how FORGETTING AUGUST ended, I wasn't sure how JL Berg was going to end this duet. I have to say, she did a great job of turning around these characters and finding their HEA.
Everly and August have a lot to sort through. Everly is trying to move forward with her wedding and hoping that August can forgive her, somehow. August is trying to protect Everly and hoping she can forgive him and move forward. But the biggest problem with either of them moving forward or getting someone to forgive them is by communicating and being honest with each other. This is a concept that neither of these characters seems to be able to grasp.
August's issues all started because he had this innate need to protect Everly. From himself. From the things he'd done. And ultimately his boss Trent. But if he had trusted Everly enough to tell her the truth, none of what they went through might have happened. He put himself and Everly through so much under the guise of protecting her. He almost falls into the same trap again, but the new August learns from his mistakes and is surprised at the help he can get when he uses his words.
Everly was her own hot mess. In love with August, engaged to Ryan, she didn't know what she should do. She relied on others to point her in a certain direction, rather than relying on herself. And that was Everly's obstacle to overcome. Once she realized she was strong enough to stand on her own, she became a force to reckon with.
In the end, August and Everly got their HEA. It was a HEA that I think, in the end, was much more gratifying than anything they would have had before. They earned what they had, together, knowing the other was there to support them. They didn't need money, just each other and their friends to make it.
Another great read by JL Berg. If you haven't picked up one of her books yet, this duet is definitely one to jump into.
