This year, I've read books by authors I had never read before so it could be said this year is a year of firsts. I've heard about Harper Sloan a lot. The cover for Perfectly Imperfect had me transfixed—it's beautiful! The synopsis was really interesting and it deals with Mental Illness so I was all for it. When I got it for review, I was so giddy.
I'm the imperfect to his perfect.
WHAT I LIKED:
I really loved the message in the story. This is a story that openly talks about Anoxeria Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa. It has been a while since I've read a story that feels so real when it comes to these two topics and the struggle the character goes through. Willow is a very curvy woman and heck, I actually liked that she was. The majority of books have girls/women that are so skinny. As someone who's skinny, believe me when I say it's not that good of a thing. (I'm serious. I want my curves. I really do. I'm hoping that when I hit 25 years, my body will get the memo that it needs curves.) Anyways, so reading about Willow had me so freaking excited. Her view of herself isn't great at all, but she is a very strong woman who won't let herself get beaten down. There are times she believes she's pretty and I would be so happy for her. Then there were the depressing times, which were a lot, and I sympathized with her.
The message of loving your body and overcoming the struggles that go with suffering from a Mental Illness had me loving this book, so what ruined it?
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE:
I don't know how I made it so far into the story (61%). I pushed through the beginning because I was so excited for Willow to fully accept her self-worth. Plus, this is a very personal story to the author so I was very interested in it. I also was ready for Willow and Kane to get to know each other. When they did, I couldn't deal with the book. I don't think I've ever wanted to barf while reading a book until this one. The romance was that horrible. It didn't let me enjoy this one at all! Instead of going all soft and "aw'ing" over the romance, I just wanted to get it over with.
Overall, Perfectly Imperfect did not work for me at all. The message was there and I would have loved to continue reading, but the romance could have been handled in a different way.
I received an eBook from the publicist for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. This review was originally posted on Latte Nights Reviews.
