Embankments perform an important function in the efficient operation of an infrastructure network, whether it is railway, highway or waterway, and they typically form 30 per cent of all transport infrastructure. Embankments require maintenance and the need to undertake it has become increasingly apparent as the materials within these structures age. This can lead to instability, which has both economic and safety implications. This publication provides guidelines on good practice for the appraisal of infrastructure embankment condition and describes the remedial treatments available. The purpose of "Infrastructure Embankments" is: to present best practice; to provide a guide for routine use; to recommend maintenance strategies for best value for money; and to facilitate knowledge sharing. It addresses technical issues in design, repair and maintenance and is published as an enabling document to promote the managerial and engineering requirements of infrastructure embankments. It will be of interest and value to infrastructure owners, designers, contractors and maintenance managers
