John Brown's fascinating memoir provides a portrait of an English town in the 20th century. Born above his father's ironmonger's shop in 1912, John Brown went on to become a solicitor, Chapter Clerk at Guildford's new cathedral and chairman of the Governors at two different schools including his own, the Royal Grammar School. He served in the army throughout World War two, including more than three years spent overseas; he holds the Burma Star. He became involved in numerous local associations, institutions and societies on his return. His eclectic book ranges widely through the movements in his public and family life and the changes in the town in which he lived and which he served. It provides not just a personal history, but also an insight into Guildford's civic society.
