Bourdelle began his career as studio assistant to Rodin in 1883-4, but parted company with him artistically in the great series of sculptures from 1902 which included `Heracles the Archer' and the `Dying Centaur'. These consolidated his reputation as the leading sculptor in France after Rodin and led to the two great commissions of the Alvear monument in Buenos Aires (1913-26) and the Mickiewicz monument in Paris (1908-28).
