The Great Southern Railways of Ireland was the largest of the major Irish railways and was created in 1924 by the amalgamation all the railways which were completely within the Irish Free State, as it was called at that time. The scope of this book includes all locomotives inherited by the GSR in 1924, broad and narrow guage, described on a class by class basis, including the pre-1924 history of each engine. It thus has chapters dealing with the inherited locomotives of the GS&WR, DSER, CBSCR and MGWR, as well as many smaller railways. This is followed by the details of all locomotives built or acquired between 1924 and 1944 and their subsequent fate under CIE. There are additional chapters on tenders, other motive power (GSR steam and petrol railcars, and the unique Drumm electric trains) and the fuel saga of 1939-48. The book is illustrated with 346 black and white photographs and has detailed appendices with dimensions and statistics.
