Barnett Newman discovered his mode of expression in 1948, after painting "Onement I". With its large homogenous colour fields interrupted by vertical strips (his "zips"), Newman proposed the sublime picture that illustrates nothing and symbolizes nothing. In this volume, Armin Zweite presents and analyzes key works from all the various phases of Barnett Newman's creative output. Besides offering an interpretation of Newman's paintings and graphic works, Zweite also comments on all the sculptures individually. By taking Newman's painted, plastic and graphic works together, this study conveys a differentiated insight into the artist's work.
