Chawton House Library focuses on women's writing from 1600 to 1830. This specialist collection is set in the home and estate of Jane Austen's brother, Edward Knight. The Novels-On-Line project provides access to some of the collection from the website and requests from our supporters, has led to the publication of this series from the Novels-On-Line Project. A NEW ATALANTIS,FOR The Year One Thousand Seven Hundred and Sixty contains tales of love from the classical world: 'The amours of Alexander' and 'The amours of Cleopatra with Julius Caesar and Mark Anthony'. The New Atalantis is presented by its anonymous author to its audience for their 'comprehensive view', or judgement, of how love is best managed in a civilised society: 'For without a strict observance of decency and gentleness, all intercourse between the two sexes loses greatly of its value.'
