See reviews first on my blog
Adam has struggled with alcohol abuse since his girlfriend and band mate Marybeth(sunshine) died. They had made it big as singers, but they both had suffered so much in their childhoods between foster homes and abuse and then losing their other band mates in an accident.
The only thing that is able to get Adam out of the house and to stop drinking was a doctor promising that they could clone Marybeth and make her again. While Adam likes this idea at first as time goes on and he is thinking clearly he starts to change his mind a little.
"Sunshine. Alive again. Not Sunshine, my brain whispers. Marybeth. This is crazy. Sick crazy. A-worm-wriggling-around-my-brain crazy. I walk from room to room, the Hope-Ghost drifting behind me."
I think what really helped to change his mind is the friendship he had with Genevieve and how it made him realize that this wasn't about just Marybeth, but about so much more and how some of the people intentions that were apart of this project weren't in the right place. I was happy though with the ending and how Adam made things be somewhat okay. (I say somewhat because Adam has a lot of stuff he's going to have to deal with and its gonna take time.)
"Maybe I'm still standing, but I'm so angry and scared and said and guilty that most days I can't bear it."
I've really struggled with writing this review for multiple reasons. The main one I've realized now though is because I didn't really feel anything for the book. I didn't love it, but I also didn't think it was the worst book Mainly I think this was an okay read. To me the writing was okay and the characters were okay as well. I just never connected to any of them like I thought I was supposed to. Yeah Adam and Marybeth had a crappy childhood and many horrible things had happened to them. So I understood the substance abuse they both had and how marybeth couldn't keep going on.
Thank you to Negalley and AW Teen for an e-Arc of this book in exchange for my honest review.
