Moses Montefiore, one of the most influential figures in Jewish history, through whose life the author will examine the history of British - and European - Jewry throughout the nineteenth century. Montefiore was the child of poor Italian immigrants, born in Livorno in 1784, but brought up in London. At the age of 19 he set up as a broker on the London Stock Exchange, one of only 12 Jewish brokers in London. He retired in 1824, after which, heavily influenced by his travels to Palestine and the abject condition of the Jewish community there, he became involved in the campaign for Anglo-Jewish emancipation. For the next sixty years, he was every bit an establishment figure, entertaining the royal family, sponsoring charitable work and, above all, helping to define an international Jewish consciousness. His is the most remarkable life and, spanning a century, as it does affords a riveting insight into nineteenth-century history.
