The second in a series of handbooks on contemporary composers, this is an introduction to the work of Jonathan Harvey. It describes his creative development and includes a substantial interview with Harvey, as well as a comprehensive work list. After studies with Erwin Stein and Hans Keller, Harvey explored, in his earliest works, the living English tradition extending from Britten to Maxwell Davies. At the same time, however, he was no less open to developments on the wider international scene, and his music has achieved as much success in continental Europe and America as it has in Britain. Although he has received praise as a result of public performances of his music, it is in Harvey's studio work, especially at IRCAM, that he has explored the conjunction between technology and spirituality that gives his work its most individual quality.
