Channelling or `canalising′ imports is an instrument of state intervention in international trade that most countries in the world have adopted in one form or another. Developing countries in particular, faced with serious balance of payment problems, have resorted to import canalisation on a grand scale. This pioneering study discusses the pros and cons of import canalisation using India as a case study.
