This illustrated history portrays one of England's finest counties. It provides a nostalgic look at Essex's past and highlights the special character of some of its most important historic sites.

The photographs are taken from the Historic England Archive, a unique collection of over 12 million photographs, drawings, plans and documents covering England's archaeology, architecture, social and local history. Pictures date from the earliest days of photography to the present and cover subjects from Bronze Age burials and medieval churches to cinemas and seaside resorts.

Essex was originally the kingdom of the East Saxons but the area was important during Iron Age and Roman times, with Colchester being the oldest recorded town in Britain. As London grew in importance, Essex became heavily populated around its border with the city, with smaller towns along its coast and in its more agricultural and forested areas. Many coastal towns were developed as resorts in the 19th and 20th centuries, particularly Southend-on-Sea, and Chelmsford was awarded city status in 2012. New towns at Harlow and Basildon were built in the latter half of the 20th century and London's third busiest airport was developed at Stansted. Today, Essex is a county of contrasts, with its industrialised and urban regions, historic towns and villages, and extensive estuarine coastland.

For all those who know and love Essex, this book will enable them to discover its remarkable history and variety of places through a fascinating collection of historical photographs.
