Where Silence Gathers could be renamed to Where Sleep Gathers. I found this book sooo boring! I actually did fall asleep while reading it. I am not joking. I was reading, next thing I know my puppy is snoring in my ear and I have pillowcase lines on my face. It's not all bad, but I generally didn't care for it. I was also kind of annoyed at first that it was a companion to Some Quiet Place rather than a sequel. Elizabeth and Fear's story didn't feel done to me, but I thought maybe they'd make an appearance in Alex's tale. Nope.
In Where Silence Gathers we meet Alex and her constant companion, Revenge. Just like Elizabeth, Alex can see Emotions and Elements, although they can touch her. However, Choices also make an appearance in this installment, and I actually quite liked this aspect. Alex's family was killed by a drunk driver, and she cannot let go. She stalks the man, watching, and plotting his end. She believes Revenge is her best friend, since he's always with her. Forgiveness also makes a few appearances, as Alex wavers in her decision. This was really the only part of the story I liked, everything else was boring.
Another plot was introduced, a kind of mystery. Alex finds a flash drive in her father's clothes, and spends some time trying to guess the password. When she does, she finds all kinds of strange files involving scientific research. Then there's something about kidnapped kids, and lying doctors, and I don't even know. I think that's when I fell asleep. This mystery just did not hold my attention at all. It detracted from the revenge story, and I wanted to get back to that. When it finally did, I really liked that resolution.
Where Silence Gathers simply didn't do it for me. I loved the addition of Choices, and how Alex wavered between Revenge and Forgiveness. There is a romance, but I didn't believe it at all. It had a great foundation and the potential to rip my heart out, but it didn't. In short, great ideas, boring execution.
