Though living in an age of relative economic and political security, many of us feel out of control of our lives. The local community and the family are often regarded as dated. Isolated from each other, over-dependent on media abstractions, many find answers in orthodoxy - in religious fundamentalism, in the academic ghettos of the politically correct, in the tribal politics of racial, religious or ethnic supremacy. The author of this text suggests that what is really needed is a new ethic - local and personal - which can serve as a counterforce to the abstract, manic de-personalizing pull of globalism. He aims to provide a view which is neither nostalgic nor utopian, isolationist nor apathetic, but a call to individuals to become more engaged and effective by breaking through the global abstractions which often leave individuals feeling overwhelmed and helpless.
