In this volume a group of Jordanian economists examine the extent to which economic inequality in Jordan has increased over the last decade, despite - and in some cases because of - a concerted programme of economic development. Using empirical data on the distribution of income (no more sophisticated data on wealth distribution are available) the contributors analyze wage and income differentials by occupation, economic sector, and rural/urban variables. Of particular interest are analyses of income distribution in the West Bank and Gaza. In a final section on policy issues the contributors discuss income distribution as it relates to social security and health care expenditures.
