Imagine finally having your teenage crush within reach. Close your eyes and see them the way they were. How they smiled, laughed, and made you feel. Open your eyes to see them before you several years later. That is almost how it went for Derek Carmichael. Except throw in a crusty cop stopping you in front of their house to add to the delight or mortification of the experience.
Once Derek is back in Hannah Willmett’s life, he can’t see himself ever leaving again. Hannah is now divorced and moved back to their hometown while Derek is only scheduled to be there for a short time. His cantankerous grandfather needs help after breaking a bone and losing every one of the aide workers Derek has hired.
Although Derek is Hannah’s brother, Caleb, best friend, she can’t help but notice how enticingly hot he is. Even if he’s five years younger, she ultimately decides to give herself one night to enjoy all Derek has to offer.
Kwan gives us time to see Hannah and Derek develop an adult friendship before the inevitable conception occurs. They both have simple wants and desires, but with Hannah’s signature still wet on her divorce papers, she is skittish. I love how Kwan wrote the process of becoming friends before lovers, even if the lover part was Derek’s ultimate goal. They both went through a journey to discover what they really wanted out of life and it ended up bringing them together despite the obstacles Kwan placed in their way.
I loved Derek’s grandfather! He was my favorite secondary character. Hard to live with and love, but in the end Kwan brought out his mushy side.
Unexpectedly Yours is the journey of two people toward their happily ever after, which includes home renovation, cranky relatives, and falling in love when you least expect it.
