This book describes the life and times of Dr Sam Cohen, the father of the neutron bomb, from his early childhood fight up to the present. In a career spanning over 40 years, Dr Cohen has had dealings with US Presidents, powerful congressmen, statesmen, eminent scientists, and key figures in the US Defense Department.During World War II, Dr Cohen was assigned to the Manhattan Project at Los Alamos, where he came into contact with such prominent scientists as Hans Bethe and Robert Oppenheimer. After the war, he joined the RAND corporation as a nuclear weapon analyst, and developed the technical/ military concept of the neutron bomb in 1958. He has worked as a consultant with the Los Alamos and Livermore nuclear weapon laboratories, the US Air Force, and the Office of the Secretary of Defense.In this very direct and undiluted account, Dr Cohen presents his perhaps controversial opinions drawn from his personal experiences in the world of nuclear weapons and nuclear politics, including some rather critical views on US military policy. Although his stance on certain matters will not be shared by all, he nevertheless approaches the relevant issues with frankness and integrity.
