Margaret Oliphant (1828-97) was a remarkable Victorian lady who, despite the difficulties of looking after her widowed brother's children as well as her own, found time to write over a hundred novels and other works of travel and history. 'Jerusalem', first published in 1891, provides a fascinating account of the history of the 'City of Peace'. As the author related in her introduction: 'The Story of Jerusalem is one of the most wonderful in the world, besides being of unparalleled importance to the human race. Insignificant in power, even at its greatest, it has been, through all ages of secular history, no better than a tributary and dependent of great empires which have risen and fallen and passed away, yet left this little city on its hills, always the most interesting spot on earth...' The numerous exquisite wood engravings will make this fine facsimile edition a treasured addition to the bookshelves of all those who have an interest in Jerusalem and its history.
