Claude swallowed hard. The wad of gum choked down his throat with a lump of anxiety. For the most part, the rides were still. Carnival music reverberated with earsplitting tones from the broken speakers. The low notes sputtered like deep laughter. By the shore, the Ferris wheel was scattered in pieces, each basket a burial. One woman's remains lay in still motion, clawing to be free from the wreckage. Indistinguishable blends of flesh and plastic clung to the golden bars of the carousel. The bones like charcoal, each skeleton a story of failed action. The fairground was a still life, chaos trapped like the ashes of Pompeii.
