While the world is pretty stereotypically ya, the pace keeps the story moving and the characters are interesting enough. My only complaint is fairly often Tori’s internal monologue is filled with unfounded assumptions that lead her relationships off course. Its only annoying in the monent (well quite a few moments) and doesn't derail the story. Other characters keep it on track and it all works out in the end.
My only other complaint is that each book doesnt really have a focus. There’a one big moment the series may or may not be building toward. And each book is a sequence of events along the way. But there isn't a clear arc within the books so the reader knows what climax this volume is building toward or how we’ll know when we get there (other than they fight a dragon which so far seems to be the climax of each book in one way or another).
